Dufy by Design: The Fabric Designs of Raoul Dufy includes over 100 original fabric projects presented from the archives of Bianchini-Ferier, in Lyon, France, offering an unprecedented view of the oeuvre of Dufy and his versatility in working in numerous media.
|
Dufy’s paintings always have been enjoyed for their beauty and celebration of life, but there is a depth in his work that has been unexplored by most exhibitions until now. Dufy had a unique strength and a very personal vision, which will surprise and delight viewers who may not be familiar with the versatility and diversity in the many facets of his life’s work.
He conceives of the world in terms of hues that others can scarcely imagine, and he does not dilute those colors with the pre-conceptions of Impressionism. He transformed Fauvism’s flat bold palette and spontaneous drawing into a personal style filled with wit, lyrical line and sumptuous color.

Dufy’s art shows a profound sensibility and springs from a joyful meditation that radiates a sense of elation and joie de vivre. He discovered an infinite richness in daily life and his creative imagination, his fantasy, and his mental energy, all combined to produce a visual poetry that glorifies life in all its manifestations.
During his long and successful career, he worked with many of the most important creators of the era including Jean Cocteau, Guillaume Apollinaire, Paul Poiret, Othon Friesz, Stephen Mallarme, Josep Artigas, and Andre Lurcat.
The exhibition is arranged in a flexible and primarily chronological circuit that is adaptable to many different gallery configurations.
